Memento opening titles analysis

The video above is the opening titles to the film memento, The titles to memento do very well in creating a very sombre and sinister mood for the beginning of the movie. This is done through a variety of techniques used in the crafting of the opening titles through the use of sound, camera work, editing and mise en scene.

This is done through the use of sound as when the titles start to appear and throughout a predominantly quite deep soundtrack is used with long, low, slow notes that create quite sorrowful connotations. this Is highlighted later in the clip with the hyperbolic sound of the gunshot and the sound of the man shouting out, as we do not hear what the man says this adds ambiguity to the piece and contributes to the confusion that the audience is feeling and causes them to ask more questions about the titles to this movie. When this is accompanied by the serious times new roman blue text that the names appear in added to the serious and sad atmosphere.

Editing is also very cleverly used as the sequence is shown in reverse but is takes a while for the audience to notice this, it give us time to absorb what we are seeing with the use of long takes and props (such as the gun and the photo) to hint at what the film Is possibly about.
